In Canada, beef is the meat group with the highest per capita consumption.
I know that applies in my home and most certainly in Darold & Kara Enright’s home.
But the Enrights have taken their love for beef to a whole new level. They operate the Enright Cattle Co., a 95-acre farm near Tweed, Ontario. Both fourth-generation farmers — and their young children Corben and Evelyn are now the fifth.
The Enrights raise purebred black and red Simmental cattle. They breed them, and all their calves are born on the farm where they raise them on a grass diet until they are large enough to be weaned.
Then they move them a few kilometres down the road, to Langevin Farms, which is owned and operated by Kara’s parents, Don and Chris Langevin. Langevin Farms have farmed in Tweed for over 30 years.
Their cattle stay at Langevin Farms until they are fully grown. Between the two farms, they plant, grow and harvest all the crops they need to feed their cattle. They use no artificial hormones.
Thanks to their unique barcode system, they can trace every cut of meat they produce. This helps them to farm more efficiently and lets them use customer feedback to constantly improve their practices.
You can purchase Enright Cattle Co.’s beef on their website or in Ottawa at Muckleston & Brockwell Market Butchery.
Be sure to look for their meat in your favourite restaurants in Ottawa and Toronto!
